My Thoughts on iOS 5
by Joe Spinogatti on July 12, 2011
These are my current thoughts/observations on the current beta (3) of iOS 5. I’ll continually update this as I go until the GM.
Beta 1
- I am a fan of the new notification system. It’s clean and simple, very much like the Android notification system.
Beta 2
- The playback controls when viewing Quicktime video via the web do not show up when the screen is tapped. To get to the end of a video, I have to either use the controls on the headphones or completely quit Safari, open it back up, and close the page before the video loads again.
- The Google+ app crashes. A lot. Not a fan.
- I don’t like the new bubble notification system that was brought back in beta 2. Yes, they look nicer than the original popups, but the notification system how it was in iOS 5 Beta 1 seemed much cleaner to me.
Call me a fanboy…

…all you want. I don’t care. This has to be one of the greatest commencement speeches ever given; and it was given by one of the greatest men to ever walk this earth.
Rant of the Day
by Joe Spinogatti on May 19, 2011
The word “bias” is the word in my rant of the day.
You either have a bias or you are biased.
It is not grammatically correct to say that “You are bias.” Never, ever, ever, ever, ever.
Yemen’s President Agrees to Step Down
by Joe Spinogatti on April 23, 2011
Victory for the people! It amazes me that just the power of people can make things happen. Murbarak stepped down and Ali Abdullah Saleh has agreed to step down. Now all we need is for Gaddafi to leave (chance of that happening at the moment, however – slim to none).

Back To The iPhone I Go
by Joe Spinogatti on March 13, 2011
Well, I can’t say I didn’t try. After spending five months with my Samsung Captivate, I just simply couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t deal with the freezing, the lag, and the all around janky feel of the Android OS.
Now, time for a disclaimer: Yes, my Captivate was rooted, but only for the last month. The Captivate is still on build 2.1 of the Android Operating System, Eclair. Seeing all of the neat features that were available on 2.2 and 2.3, I couldn’t stand being left in the dust while other Android phones got new features. Samsung and AT&T really need to speed up on that update process. Maybe then I would have stayed with Android.
Call me a fanboy, call me whatever. In my honest opinion, the iPhone has a better feature set for my needs. The iPhone has an insanely better catalog of apps and a much better music player. I, having already been a member of the Apple universe before (and seeing no reason to leave) have money invested in apps and music that I couldn’t use while on my Captivate.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I applaud Android for being an open source initiative but, as of right now, the feature set and the polish are not there for my needs. I’m sure Android will continue to improve, and I know I’ll give it another try when it does.
New Pandora Station
by Joe Spinogatti on January 31, 2011
Quick blog post… I made a new Pandora station based on the song “Sweat (a la la la la long)” by Inner Circles.
Best. Idea. Ever.
Newfound love for reggae music? Yes.
Samsung Captivate Updates
by Joe Spinogatti on January 26, 2011
While I am a person who appreciates the fact that my phone is now able to update its software without being tethered to a computer, I don’t like it when it looks nasty.
I’m not saying that I would take a tethered update over a janky looking over-the-air update, but going from the “polished interface” of Android on my Captivate to the software update bar, it’s gross.
Granted, it’s not there for very long, but just make it look a little cleaner next time. Please Samsung? AT&T?
Samsung Captivate
by Joe Spinogatti on January 25, 2011
While Android 2.3 Gingerbread is already out, my little Captivate is still running 2.1. Yes, it is rooted, and yes, I have tried to follow the instructions online, however, when I get to the “tar zxvf” command, I either get a file not found or a tar magic error.
Does anyone know of a simple way to update a Samsung Captivate to Android 2.3?
